"In The Home Goods Section Of A Texas Marshalls In November 2023
Christmas is all around us and
I am shopping for my loved ones who celebrate
On a shelf
In a corner
At the back of the store
Are two menorahs: one black and angular, one gold and curved
A woman who looks like
every girl from my Hebrew school is considering them
I joke at the inequality of a whole store full of red and green
and two not even that pretty menorahs
is all we get
But I am clumsy with my words
and under my N95, she can’t see my smile
only my blue eyes
and the red and green in my cart
She jokes about being Jewish louder now
I encourage her, but suddenly remember
*עם ישראל חי
no longer lifts like a chorus but instead
these days
lands like a bomb
it’s not my blue eyes or
the red and green in my cart
that puts distance between us
but our cousins regifting the worst of our inheritance
*Am Yisrael Chai, “The People of Israel Live”"
