So l'm guessing there were plans to transfer or store her consciousness using hidden technology but something went wrong and now she is trapped in whatever mechanism was used. I've heard stranger things, if that's the case.

That's exactly correct. They use technology to directly transfer consciousness into a child in utero. However, she isn't trapped in a mechanism. She's trapped on a spiritual plain.
